Le Festin

Absolutely beautiful song.

The song is called Le Festin, is sung by Camille and comes from the movie, you-guessed-it, Ratatouille. I think I've heard it 48267 times already today. The movie, by the way, is very worth watching. If you haven't seen it yet, stop reading and go download watch it in the cinema right N-O-W.

I just fell in love with French all over again.

Managed to find the lyrics. Did not understand 99% of it. The remaining 1% I could recognize the words but what I thought it meant and what it actually meant was completely different. Eek.

No more learning Spanish! *pretending that I am still learning* (stopped a loooooong time ago)

I shall take up French again!

(But have to wait until I go back to Louisville and move to my own apartment and find a car and finish my next exam and attend APC and and and...)

My Horoscope

Guess what's my horoscope today?

You may feel pushed and pulled emotionally but that's what it will take to get you to do what needs to be done to move on. Let go of the things and people who are no longer a benefit. You can find happiness, security and a better future.
Exactly what I need!

I've been saying the same thing over and over again since last Christmas. But what my head tells me and what my heart actually feels can be quite different. And I'm way better friends with my head than my heart.

So yesterday I made a decision to cut off everything. No more 藕断丝连。 Otherwise it'll just drag on and on and take me forever to move on.

I've been rationalizing and overanalyzing my emotions since day one. No more of that. I don't have to reason out what is right and what is wrong. After all, 是非对错谁人悉? We don't have to exchange sorry's, don't have to say thanks. What happened was nobody's fault and our choice. 过去的让它过去.

Thanks to all of you who kept me company. Thanks for listening to me rant on and on and over and over about the same thing. Thanks for staying up at night listening to me vent. Thanks for listening to me even when you need to work. You know who you are. If you think I'm talking about you, then I probably am. Thank you so much. Just a heads up, I'm not saying thanks now because I won't rant anymore.. because I very well might. But I'll try not to. ;)

I don't have to pretend to be strong. If my emotions wash over me again, I'll let myself swim in it, but I won't drown. No I won't. I'm not the only person in the whole world who's going through this. It's just that it's my first, and I'm learning.

But I'll walk through this. How long will it take before I wander through this maze? I don't know. Maybe months, maybe weeks or maybe days. Time will heal me and he doesn't take Disney Fastpasses. So I'll just wait. (And study for that exam in the meantime.)

You know how the more you try to do something, the worse you do? Like when I'm playing Minesweeper, if I am consciously trying to beat my best time, I'll play even slower than I usually do. I got my fastest records when I was not paying attention, clicking away while daydreaming about something else.

So I guess this is the same thing. One day soon enough, when I'm out grocery shopping, or having a walk in the park, it'll suddenly hit me: "Hey, I haven't thought about so-and-so for a while now."

And then I'll know I've moved on.

Here's to my happiness, security and a better future!

(Head: Psst, hey Heart, you listening to all this?)

Looking Back Looking Ahead

Let's talk about 2006.

I wrote a letter to Santa in 2005 as a recap of the year, but this Christmas I decided not to write to Santa anymore. Didn't have any wishes to ask. Besides, I'm getting too old to write to Santa.

2006.. hmm.. lots of "first"s in that year.

It started off with a bang. Literally. I spent New Year's eve in Las Vegas with my gorgeous roommie. Who's off to Europe right now looking for Parisian hunks. I hope she's successful, cause she has promised to bring home one for me. Keke.

Oops digressed a bit there.

2006 was a year of change. I changed from "student" to "actuarial analyst". Can't sleep in just because I feel like it anymore. No more homework or assignments. No more eating in Hubbell. Have to dress up properly everyday. Have to act professional.

I moved from Des Moines to Louisville. All alone. A little scary but quite liberating as well. I'm finally living alone after 5 years of dorm life. I love having roommates though. Miss all my roommies.

I visited a few places. The Grand Canyon, House on the Rock (Wisconsin), Disney World! (Orlando), and St Louis (Missouri). Had a lot of fun.

I went home finally after almost 3 years. So many things changed but so many things didn't change as well. I ate a lot of good food, met all my cousins and friends and relived the 'mamak' experience. Which made me feel that the best place to be is still home. Even if the quality of life is supposedly not as good, even if I don't earn as much there, home will always be home.

And 2006 ended with another bang. A different kind. After a little more than 5 years, I'm now single, available but not desperate. Yet. Keke. Back to where I began, but older and wiser. It's been a good journey, and I'm ready for a new chapter in my life.

I left last year with a lot of questions and some confusion. This year, I might not get all the answers I want, but I will do my best to search for them.

I spent last year doing all the things that I thought I should do, whether I want to or not. I started things with my heart, but let my head overrule everything. This year I'm going to follow my heart, and do what I really really want.

Last year I spent too much time studying and working. This year I want to pay more attention to my family (including my cousins) and friends.

If 2006 was a transition year, I want 2007 to be a year of self-discovery. It's going to be all about the me inside. :)

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year everyone!!! *fireworks display*

And with a spanking new 2007, comes a new blog layout! Ta-dah! What do you think? I love it! Best I can do with my copying and pasting skills. The background is supposed to make it look like I'm writing on recycled paper. And the tulips in the header, well that's because I like tulips. :)

Oh, press F5 and watch the "Quotes" section in the sidebar. And the row of tabs at the top are clickable and link to the blog posts with the corresponding labels. Isn't that cool? I have no idea how to write the code that does that.

So since this is the first blog entry for 2007, I figured I should start the year in the right path and do........ my new year resolutions!

First of all though, I need to revamp my lifetime goals a bit. I read somewhere that the best way to set lifetime goals is to figure out what I want people to say at my funeral. But that's just depressing. So I decided that I will write my goals as far-ranging as I can.

Here goes...

In my lifetime (as far I can see), I want to

  • learn French, Russian, Spanish, and Japanese and any other language that I can
  • travel the world, especially Greece, Italy, Argentina, the Caribbean islands and France
  • learn how to dance... properly
  • have enough free time everyday
  • find my soul-mates
  • stay close with my family, relatives and friends
  • love someone with all my heart
  • have someone who loves me with all his heart
  • have a fulfilling and challenging career but not let it rule my life (this cannot be a 9-to-5 job!)
  • meet people from different places and different cultures
  • have an interesting story to tell my grand-kids when I become a cool grandma :P
  • be fit and healthy and look good
  • give generously without expecting anything in return
  • follow through with my plans and not procrastinate
  • be satisfied and at peace with who I am

The cross-outs are from my previous lifetime goals, italics are new additions. The goals are all pretty vague and general, except the first two. But I'm going to come up with a way of measuring how far I've achieved each one. Like say if I'm once again in an airport and late for my connecting flight, and I can run from gate A10 to D12 without feeling like my heart is going to burst, then I have achieved the "be fit and healthy" goal.

Alrighty, I'm not going to write my new year resolutions here because it's too personal. Oh but I want to say I've found a way to motivate myself to reach my goals. For every day/week/month that I follow through on what I plan to do, I'm going to put $1 into my imaginary piggy bank for vacation funds. E.g. if I plan to exercise twice a week and I did it this week, $1 is in the fund. Yeah I know $1 is not a lot, but I have A LOT of goals. And I'm not going to take out money if I don't reach my goals. I don't believe in denying oneself of pleasures. :P

At the end of this year, depending on how much is in my "piggy bank", Europe / Hawaii / Pulau Redang here I come!

(I sure hope it's Europe.)

“The greatest risk is not taking one”

所以这四天里面,我要为明年的改变踏出第一步。

My Goals: Revisited

Guess what I found in my old blog? My lifetime goals as of March 2005!

In my lifetime, I want to...

  • learn Russian, Spanish, Japanese and any other language that I can
  • travel the world, especially Greece, Argentina, the Caribbean islands and France
  • learn how to dance... properly
  • have enough free time everyday
  • find my soul-mates
  • love someone with all my heart
  • have someone who loves me with all his heart
  • have a career but not let it rule my life (this cannot be a 9-to-5 job!)
  • meet people from different places and different cultures
  • have an interesting story to tell my grand-kids when I become a cool grandma :P

Haha cool grandma? Can't even imagine being a 'ma' yet. I've been thinking... I don't think I wanna have kids. It's a big responsibility you know. And I don't know if I can handle that, feels kinda scary. True, I think babies are absolutely adorable, at least the cute ones are adorable lah. If I have a baby, he will definitely be cute... because his parents are good-looking mah. :P Btw it has to be a 'he' since there can be only one girl in his dad's life. Hah!

Ok now everybody is going to think that I actually want to have a baby. NO NO NO.

I only think the baby part is fun, when I'm still calling the shots and he can't do much about it. But what about when he grows up?? (I can't believe I'm thinking so far ahead, but I am.) So not fun ok?? So much money to spend on him!! Demanding a car, cellphone, pocket money, computer... And what about when he starts breaking girls' hearts left and right because he's so good looking??? Or waiting up late at night because he hasn't come home yet?

Eesh, so many things to worry about. It's not like college... take a class for one week and if I don't like it I can just hand in a drop form at the office. Wish I can take care of a baby and then call it quits when it starts being unfun, but who's going to accept a drop form for a rebelling teenager???

Ah, I think I'd rather save up to travel around the world. Didn't get to visit Greece, Argentina or France yet, but I will. Haven't done much about my goals this past year and a half. Did I learn a new language? Nope. Did I learn to dance? Nope. Did I allow for enough free time everyday? Erm... not really.

Well since that last goal-setting session has been quite a failure, I've decided to... come up with new goals! This time I'm going to use SMART goals... heehee... something I learned in Management 110. *assumes lecturer's tone* Ahem, SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound. Wah I actually remembered! But I haven't finalized my goals yet, been thinking about them for these past 2 days. I'm planning to set them by this Friday so I can get started beginning November!

Color Scheme for chez moi

I lurrve having my own apartment. It’s exhilarating to get to decide what furniture to buy, where to put it, and what personal touches to add. All by myself! Of course so much freedom must come at a price, and at the rate I’m going, I think I’ll be paying a pretty hefty price. But ah well, as I always say, a happy apartment is a happy me.

The big news today is… I’ve finally picked a color scheme for my apartment!! I spent so long trying to choose, there’s so many colors out there and each one has its own advantages. I mean do I want blue because it’s soothing, or green because it has “great healing powers”, yellow to invoke cheerfulness or red for la passion intense. And then they all have their negatives too, blue suppresses appetite (which is important because I have a 3-in-1 room that’s the dining room, bedroom and living room), green is just not my color, yellow makes people irritable and too much red can create aggression. You see my dilemma?

But finally, finally, finally, I have decided it’s going to be… *drum rolls* … white, red and black! Yeah I know I said too much red makes people aggressive, but since I’m such a demure and gentle person by nature, it wouldn’t be much harm right? :P Just kidding lah. Stop rolling your eyes please. And to clear all questions, this has nothing to do with wanting to create passion okay? It’s just a nice striking color that goes well with white and black. :P

I’ve been reading quite a lot of articles on interior decorating. Budget interior decorating to be exact. It says that I should start decorating one area at a time. So I’m gonna tackle my living room first! Well, actually more like my living corner since almost everything is in the same room. (I live in a studio.) Current plan is to get a slipcover for my loveseat, it’s brown at the moment and in my dreams it should look more like deep red. Can’t decide whether I should go for a lighter shade (maybe beige) and use red for the throw pillows instead, or stick to a deep red loveseat and light-colored pillows. How how? Which one is better?

Oh and I’m checking out posters too! I want to hang a sweet romantic-ish one above my bed. Found one I really like, but don’t know whether I should get it or not. It has 2 white cuddly teddy bears holding a velvet red heart together. Costs a lot to frame it up though and I don’t know if it will look good laminated. Here’s the poster, I think it looks very cute, and it fits my white, red and black scheme too! So should I frame, mount or just laminate it?

This is so fun! I think I'll be so obsessed about decorating that I won't talk about anything else for the next few blogs. Hehe.

My 2nd week in Louisville

Arrrgh!!!! I did a stupid thing this evening coming back from work. Why did I do it? I hope it doesn’t come back to bite me. Why couldn’t I just say No? Why? Why? Why? DANG IT! EeeeeeeeeeeeSshhhhhhhHHhh!!!! GggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRrrrrrrr!!!!!

Ok now that I’ve got it out of my system… moving on to the happier stuff…

My first official weekend in Louisville was quite nice (last weekend doesn’t count because I had to spend 2 whole days setting up my apartment). I went to a Vietnamese grocery store on Saturday. There are quite a lot of Asian grocery stores here, apparently one of them sells Malaysian stuff too! :D But I don’t know how to get there and I don’t have a car, so… don’t know when I’ll go to that store. But at least now I know where to get Chinese stuff though, not stuck with eating lettuce, cabbage and broccoli only. Phew! Oh btw, I’m becoming a vegetarian again after a 3-year hiatus heehee. Lacto-ovo vegetarian to be exact. Meaning I’ll eat eggs and drink milk. But I’ll eat seafood about once a week lah, Mummy’s orders. I had lobster pasta on Sunday. :D

Sunday I went on a tour of Louisville, too. I had an unofficial ‘tour guide’. Hehe. It was more fun than I expected. Went to Bardstown Road, which has those tiny mom-and-pop shops on both sides of the road. Quite unique stuff. Then after that we went to Mall St. Matthews. I tell you, it was so difficult to walk inside loh. Every single shop was on sale!! And the mall had all the shops I like too!! I think I have internal injuries now. My heart was fighting with my head the whole time I was there. Let’s go shopping! No, save money! You need that nice bag! No, you won’t use it! Luckily, my credit card came out unswiped.

Then, after that we went to the Waterfront Park right next to the Ohio River. I’m still waiting for the photos though. I’ll write about this next time so that I can post the photos together.

Last Friday/Saturday (I don’t remember when liao) was the Mid-Autumn Festival. (Digressing a bit here: why is it called the Midautumn festival ah? It’s not the middle of Autumn also. I think Autumn starts around September 26, so if it’s true, that means we have only one month plus worth’s of Autumn only!!! Which is so not true.) My colleague gave me a mooncake. Soooooooooo nice. Her friend brought it over from Chicago, so it’s not the cheapo yucky kind of mooncake. It is quite delicious loh, shuang1 huang2 (double eggyolk) some more. Yum yum. Still have half left. I don’t have that much appetite nowadays.

Louisville is pretty nice. I’ve only been here 2 weeks so I can’t say I know the place well yet. But so far I like it a lot. The people here are very friendly (I feel so unfriendly compared to them sometimes, cause I don’t know what to say). Of course there are some very weird people too. Some are nice but weird. Some are just plain weird. And it seems like there are quite a lot of events going on during the weekends too. I’m hoping some band I like will come here to hold a concert. I know Matchbox 20 came last year and Nickelback came here 2 years ago. So am hoping. But I doubt Wang Lee Hom will come here loh. *sigh*

Oh and you know what I found out. According to a report by some online journal whose name and link I completely forgot liao, Louisville is the NUMBER ONE place for families to relocate! Ok lah, I know it says for families. But then if it’s good for families, it shouldn’t be that bad for young adults guaaaaaaaa. At least should be safe right? And families doesn’t mean ‘with small kids’ only right? Should include those with young adult children right right?

Also, according to another report by another online journal whose name and link I also completely forgot liao, Nashville is the NUMBER ONE place for relocating singles!! Hmm… Atlanta, Austin, New York and Houston are in the top 5 too. Am thinking about going to Atlanta October next year when I come back from Canada. But it’s such a pain to keep moving some place where I don’t know anyone. Maybe I’ll just come back to Louisville. I like the city. We’ll see what happens next year.

Okay, going to start on my FAP modules now. Haven’t been studying since I took the exam in May. 5-month break! I haven’t had such a long break since that 9-month holiday right before I came to the States. Ah, I miss my holiday.

Packing Woes

Just started packing for my trip back to the States and the same thing that hits me every time I pack has struck yet again......

I have too much stuff!

I'm bringing back two big bags. Add to that another 3 huge boxes that are already in US. 3 years ago I came to the States with 2 bags, and transferred to Drake with 2 bags a year later. Doing good so far. Then when I graduated from Drake I have 5! Hmm.. something must have went awry those 2 years.

Specifically I have too many clothes (3 boxes worth to be exact). Half of them I rarely wear and another 10% I haven't worn in a year. What is very frustrating is when I pack, I still bring that 10% along because what IF one fine day I need to wear it and I didn't bring it along? Naturally this scenario never happens because that 10% stays unworn. Dilemma here: unworn because it's too uncomfortable/ small/ big/ slutty-like/ aunty-like/ has weird color, but can't bear to throw it away because it's still in very good condition.

Which is why my wardrobe is full of clothes, and yet I can still feel that I have nothing to wear. Argh! Maybe I should take a leave out of the little brown dress project. This woman actually wore the same brown dress everyday for a year. She hasn't went shopping for clothes for almost 2 years. I'm so impressed. But I don't think I want to do that.

So instead from today until next July, I will...

  • not buy any clothes or accessories, unless it's something I don't have and I need it for work, e.g. a good bag. Work is the key word here.
  • make a shopping list before I go grocery shopping and STICK to it
  • browse through catalogs only ONCE and recycle immediately
My goal for next July when I move once again: My life's possessions have to fit in 5 boxes or less.

Pilot Entry

This marks the first sentence in the first entry of my not-so-first blog. :D

I'm moving to Louisville, Kentucky soon. All alone. *sigh* Actually, it's kinda exciting to start fresh, because IF I manage to kick my bad habits, noone in the land of Fried Chicken will know I even had them in the first place. Muahahahaha. But then again... who is going to watch movies with me? Who is going to makan dinner with me? And most importantly, who is going to PLAY MAHJONG with me????

The big plan is, I'll write down my life working abroad in this journal. And I mean every single detail. I don't care how boring or mundane some entries may be. Because someday 10 years from now, I'll be glad that I have something to keep these memories alive.

I realize that I have virtually no pictures from my Freshman year in Grinnell. So sad. Those were fun times, watching movies with my roommate and next-door neighbor, hanging out with the international students (mostly Indian economics majors for some unknown reason) and having deep thoughtful conversations. No pictures as reminders, though. :( Good thing I took more photos at Drake.

So from now on, I will take as many photos as I can!! Hopefully my photography skills can improve also, but knowing myself, that is quite unlikely. It's about time I start using my camera too, before it becomes obsolete. :S

Btw, if I don't update this blog once every few days, please call / message / VISIT me. I might have died from loneliness. Or boredom.

Vision Statement Prep

Okay, I've decided I want a vision statement for myself.

In my 3 years of college, only a handful of classes truly inspire me. FINANCE 102 IS DEFINITELY NOT ONE OF THEM. Business 195: Business Strategy and Policy is. I don't know what other people think, but imho Anthony Paustian is a very interesting and funny professor. And quite a motivational speaker.

We were talking about vision statements and goal setting on Monday. Our reading for the day included the following:

"A graduating class of students were surveyed. Only 3% had set goals for the next 5-10 years. 10 years later, the same class were surveyed again. Those 3% had achieved more than what the other 97% had achieved collectively."

Hmm.. if that doesn't make you want to set your future goals, how about a million dollars? Yes? Okay, after you set your goals, you'll have that one million dollars. :P

Anyway, I've made my mind. I'm gonna think up my vision statement for the next 5 years and set financial, spiritual, mental, family, career, social and physical goals.

Just when I'll actually get around to doing it is another matter. Perhaps after our next class when he talks about time management. ;)

Reminiscence

And so it ends. Another chapter in a story that's still unfolding, full of the typical ups and downs, parallels and dissimilarities, and the usual comings and goings.

My days are counted by school semester, so it's not odd that I'm reminiscing now. Having my last final tomorrow morning, then I'll pack and leave Des Moines in the afternoon. Not to return until mid-August. Gonna miss this city? Doubt it. Ironically, I hold more attachment to Ames (city where my boyfriend attended university, about 40 mins away from Des Moines) than this place, but it's the people in Drake that I'm gonna miss.

I started this academic year by transfering to a different university, leaving behind a college with unfinished business and bittersweet memories. It's amazing how quickly we make new friends and find our own niche in a new place. There are things about Grinnell that I still and will always miss, but in its place I've found other perks.

It's always when things are about to change that we realize how comfortable we've been with our routine. Late night suppers in Spike's, walking back to Jewett after supper with a close friend, loitering outside Jewett to talk just a little bit more, looking forward to Fridays when my boyfriend picks me up, eagerly planning new recipes to try over the weekend, snuggling together while watching movies, grumbling about having to wake up early the next morning... the list can go on and on.

An entirely different chapter is coming up. I'm excited, though I must admit that I have no idea what to expect, which undoubtedly causes a little nervousness. Summer would give me a taste of the life that I'll live soon enough, though with more spoonfuls of fun and variety, and less doses of tedium and financial worries. Once again, I'll make new friends and find my own niche in a new place.

And so it begins.

Thoughts on my Chicago trip

Been a while since I last blogged. Finally having a breather after the last few weeks of frenzy, with the standard college stuff like exams and assignments on top of some unique activities. Well actually one out-of-the-ordinary activity.

I went to Chicago last Friday. Nothing big. Just a get-together for all interns and new hires to meet up with our mentors, buddies and supervisors before summer. It was a very thoughtful gesture on the company's part. We went to watch a White Sox game (of all things, baseball?! *_*), but of course we spent most of our time talking to each other, knowing people just a little bit better.

I was a little anxious before the trip, since I know I tend to be more private when meeting groups of strangers. It turned out much better than I thought, though. Certainly helped that I had already met 3 people out of the crowd of 20-something-year-olds during my office visit. And the fact that we were all young adults really helped. I definitely wouldn't have been as at ease as I was if they were much older (i.e. age 35 and above).

On Saturday, we visited the building where the interns were going to stay during summer. Each of us gets our own studio apartment, complete with kitchen, bathroom and furnishings, another wonderful perk. The apartments were smaller than they look on the website, but the furniture was new and the rooms seem comfy to me. Am extremely looking forward to staying there now. I'm eagerly anticipating the dishes that I can make, provided I don't get tired out after working the whole day. Plus it's super downtown, so I can go shopping easily anytime I want. Oh and the Cheesecake Factory is just a block away! =D

I don't dread summer like I did half a month ago. Working full-time may not turn out to be as tedious as I thought. Especially if I become good friends with the people I work with, and the presence of other younger employees will be good. Even my internship now is more fun than before. I've been learning continuously since the first day of my internship, but sometimes new knowledge is not a sufficiently strong incentive to work, it's the people there that makes a huge difference. ;)

Ramblings

Phew! What a week! I'm glad this week is almost over. It's been an eventful 4 days, not entirely good, but not entirely bad either.

First off, Kitty and I got the room we wanted for next semester. =D The 2 days before room draw were pretty upsetting, mainly because we kept getting mis-information from people who ought to know better. Still, it all ended well. Already planning out all the slumber parties and cooking we are gonna do. Yay! It's gonna be fun having a living room and bathroom of our own. Not to mention a TV, M'sian food and bubble baths!

And I don't care what my MBTI score says, I'm definitely NOT an extrovert. Maybe I should be more open towards strangers, but ah well, that's just not me. Especially when it's a whole group of unknown people, no thank you. I feel so much more at ease when I meet one new person at a time. Otherwise, I'll stay in my own comfort circle.

I would also like to announce my humble opinions on 2 well-known phrases:

1) Honesty is not always the best policy.

2) Curiosity might not kill the cat, but it can sure hurt the feline.

I guess this week has not been particularly kind to me. Don't worry, this is the downward phase of my sinuous emotional cycle. Will be up soon!

My Ambition

Sometimes life is kinda tiring, or at least I can fill it up with stuff that makes it tiring.

Perhaps I'm trying to do too much, should at least leave some down time for myself.

But then again, being busy feels good sometimes.

Although I think I'd rather laze around and do watever interests me at the moment.

My ultimate goal in life is to get someone to take care of me,

and let me do what I want, when I want, and how I want,

ie. be a "shao nai nai".. haha!
